To qualify JCJ007's elaborate explanation; the BT Home Hub 2 has all the network login details burned into memory. I believe these can't be changed, and you can't even Telnet to the hub (I've tried). The hub also gets logged into periodically for system updates by BT (just review the event log and you'll see some strange login details).

The older Voyager routers weren't so clever (although you could do more with the inbuilt firewall) and these have been used by some people (I hear) for use on IP Address Passthrough on VPN systems.
